What is organic coffee?
Organic coffee is grown using materials and methods that leave a small impact on the environment. Organic coffee production maintains and replenish soil fertility, which means a reduce use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers (fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation). Third-party certification organizations verify that organic coffee farmers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production. Some states have a division or commissions such as the State of New Mexico Organics Commission that certifies the product meets organic standards and definitions.
What does it mean to be “certified organic”?
In order for coffee to be certified and sold as organic in the United States, it must be produced in accordance with U.S. standards for organic production and certified by an agency accredited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. U.S. requirements for organic coffee production include:
It must have been grown on land without synthetic pesticides or other prohibited substances for three years. There must have been a sufficient buffer between the organic coffee and the nearest conventional crop. The farmer must have a sustainable crop rotation plan to prevent erosion, the depletion of soil nutrients, and control for pests.

Avalon Organic Coffee are processed under strict quality control to ensure that only the highest grade beans are selected. Some of the varieties of Avalon Organic Coffees are also fair trade certified. Coffees that are fair trade certified are made from green coffee beans that are more expensive than regularly harvested beans, with more of the purchase price going to the farmers and workers who harvest those beans. Avalon Organic Coffees are now Kosher certified.
